If you are looking to train for better basketball dribbling skills there is definitely a right way to train. So many players get it wrong when it comes to properly improving their ball handling.
To start when training to get a better handle the first thing you need to work on is ball control. If you don’t have control of the ball it will be hard to have a good handle. So you don’t want to jump into working on your handle trying to go 100 mph right out of the gate.
As with any sport, the first thing you’ll want to do when you start basketball dribbling training is master the basics – the fundamentals.
For starters, work on bending your knees, getting down on the ball and fingertip control. Then you want to keep your head up and always protect the ball with your off hand.
Basketball Dribbling Training
Now when it comes to the actual training here are three areas you should work on:
1. Basic dribbling with both hands
2. Change of direction moves
3. Speed dribbling
It’s really that simple. Once you get the hang of these three you’ll want to work on combination moves and work on moves against a defender.
One thing that I recommend players do when training is to work on dribbling full court with the ball. I think this is a great way to improve your dribbling quickly.
The next thing you want to work on is going up and down the court working on your dribbling and shooting.
• Work on dribble moves attacking the basket for a layup
• Work on dribble moves and going up into your shot
Play one-on-one with a good defender.
One-on-One
I think one-on-one games are a great way to improve your ball handling. One-on-one games are also a great time to work on all the moves you practiced. I think it’s a good idea to always try to finish your workouts with a one-on-one session. And if at all possible, try to find someone who is a good defender to play against.
What not to do when training
You do not want to make your moves half speed. So make sure you are warmed up when you are working out. You want to be loose because you’ll need to make all of your moves game speed. You play how you practice.
Don’t look at the ball when you are working on your dribbling. Sometimes it is the comfortable thing to do. But you only improve by pushing beyond your comfort zone. Work on keeping your head up. Look up at the basket.
Don’t overlook the fundamentals. It may be more fun to practice all of the tricks during workouts, but the fundamentals are what will get you further. A strong foundation will take you a long way. At the higher levels, it is usually the fundamentally sound players who excel.
Intensity is a must when it comes to working out. If you want to improve on your dribbling skills it is important to apply maximum intensity during your workouts.
