basketball dribbling fundamentalsWhen you dribble the proper basketball dribbling fundamentals are a must. And unfortunately most players start playing the game without ever learning the proper fundamentals.

The good thing is with practice bad habits can be corrected. And I’m going to share with you 5 basketball dribbling fundamentals that you will need to succeed in the game.

Basketball Dribbling Fundamentals

Fundamental #1

Get down on the ball. So many players dribble the ball standing straight up. Now while there is a time and a place for everything, for the most part you want to get down on the ball.

You really want to bend your knees and get low when dribbling the ball. Therefore flexibility is very important. Think about sprinters on the starting block. They are on the ground to start and this is where they get their speed out of the gate. Well when dribbling the ball, you want to be low. This will allow you to get around defenders more easily and help you to be quicker with the ball.

Fundamental #2

Protect the ball. While this may sound elementary to some it really is a core fundamental in basketball. If you’ve ever seen Magic Johnson play at 6′ 9″, he’d protect the ball against the quickest defenders. Some of which he had close to a foot on in height and were quicker than he was.

To protect the ball you’ll want to use your off hand to protect the ball and put it in between the ball and the defense. Exposing the ball only makes it easier for the defense to take the ball from you.

I notice so many players handling the ball fancy and careless. You have to value the ball and guard it as you would your wallet. Protect the ball.

Fundamental #3

Dribble with a purpose. When you drive a car you usually have a idea of where you’re going before you put the key in the ignition. The same thing applies to dribbling. The first thing most players do when they catch the ball is start dribbling. And then they’ll usually dribble in one spot.

Over dribbling kills so many scoring opportunities because in many cases you may only have a split second to get your teammates the ball.

You ever notice how at the college level players don’t dribble as much as they do on the high school level. Well there is a big reason for this. But the main reason is in college offenses players dribble and play with a purpose. So when you put the ball on the floor you want to have an idea where you are going with it.

Fundamental #4

Put your head up and see the floor. I think this one should have been number one. Just about every player learns this when they’re first taught the game. But so many players get away from it. You should make it a daily habit to practice not looking at the ball and seeing the floor. By doing this in practice it will become second nature in the games.

Fundamental #5

Dribble well with both hands. There is no one easier to guard on the court than a one-hand bandit. You know, the player who can only dribble with one hand. Make it a daily habit to work harder on your weak hand to catch it up to your strong hand.

dribbling drills for basketballIf you’re looking to improve your ball handling here are some simple basketball dribbling drills to add to your workout routine.

Sometimes working out or practicing can be kind of boring. Especially if you don’t have a routine that gets you results. So here are some simple dribbling drills for basketball that you can add to your own routine that will get you the results you want.

I usually like to start out all of my workouts with ball handing. So here is it goes.

Dribbling Drills For Basketball

Start with two ball dribbling from the baseline and dribble with both balls bouncing them at the same time. Once you get to half court, turn around and come back.

Next alternate your dribble with two balls and go to half court and back. So when you dribble with your left hand, the ball should be in your right hand. That’s what I mean by alternating dribble.

Then I’ll start again at the baseline and dribble with one ball this time but I’ll crossover ever two dribbles till I get to half court and then turn around and come back to the baseline crossing over ever two dribbles.

The next thing I’ll do is starting at the baseline, every two dribbles I’ll dribble between the legs. Do this from baseline to half court and back.

Next, start at the baseline again and this time every two dribbles you then dribble behind the back. Dribble to half court and then back to the baseline.

Last, you’ll want to combine all three of the moves from above. So start at the baseline and after you take a dribble, then you’ll add a three move combination. So you dribble right then crossover, then between the legs, then around the back. Then you’ll take one dribble left, and then crossover, dribble between the legs, and then around the back. So on and so forth until you get to half court. And then do the same thing going back to the baseline from half court.

When you do these drills you want to work on making your moves quick, game speed. And also work on keeping your head up.

This is a simple routine and you’ll notice your handle improve drastically if you add this to your workout routine. I recommend starting out just doing this entire routine once. And as you get better doing it two or even three times every workout.

The beauty of this routine is that it is simple and you’re working on the fundamentals. So often we make things too complicated. And feel free to add other moves to this as well.

Combination moves are also great to work on because as you get to be a better all handler the easier it is to do combination moves.

So really focus and work hard at these drills. If you do, in no time the ball will start to feel like a yo-yo to you. It will start to feel like part of your body. And when that happens, you’ll be able to go anywhere you want on the court.
